Join the Central Alberta Thrift Crawl - July 4
There’s something magical about walking into a thrift store with no plan—and walking out with the beginnings of a perfect gift.
At first glance, most of what I find looks ordinary. A ceramic mug. A slightly worn book. A vintage scarf tucked between racks. But I don’t see objects—I see stories waiting to be continued.
Every basket starts with a feeling, not a product.
Sometimes it’s a cozy, rainy-day vibe. Sometimes it’s “this reminds me of someone who journals and drinks tea at midnight.” I seldom go into a thrift store looking for specific items—I go in looking for a vibe. When I do go in on a specific hunt, I often leave disappointed, so I try to stay open.
This is where the fun begins.
I scan shelves for textures, colors, and uniqueness. I'm asking:
Does this feel special?
Would someone pick this for themselves?
Does it have character?
The best finds are often imperfect in the best way—slightly vintage, a little nostalgic, totally one-of-a-kind. It all has to be cleanable and in good enough shape that I, the pickiest of picky, would be happy to receive it.
Not everything makes the cut.
I carefully curate items so the basket feels cohesive, not cluttered. A good gift basket tells a story. Every piece should feel like it belongs.
Some items just need a little love.
I clean, polish, and occasionally upcycle pieces to give them a fresh life—without stripping away their charm. And the ultimate sacrifice? I do the puzzle to make sure there are no missing pieces. I HATE doing puzzles! Bravo to those of you would are patient enough for this hobby, it ain't me!
This is where everything comes together.
I layer textures, balance colors, and make sure every item is visible and thoughtfully placed. It’s not just a basket—it’s an experience. I want the recipient to say "WOW! this is soooo great" when they are handed one of my baskets. And go ahead, take the credit! :-) I've got your back!
Anyone can buy a pre-made gift set. But a thrifted gift basket carries something more:
A sense of discovery
A lighter environmental footprint
A story that didn’t start on a factory line
And that’s what makes it unforgettable.
